Sluice Boxes - Efficient Gold Recovery for Canadian Streams

A gold sluice box dramatically increases your prospecting efficiency by processing far more material than hand panning alone. Popular across Canada from the Fraser River to Nova Scotia's gold fields, sluices use water flow and strategically placed riffles to trap gold while washing away lighter materials. Pioneer Prospecting carries a complete range of sluice boxes from portable stream sluices to large production models with Dream Mat technology.

Our Sluice Box Selection:

We stock sluices for every prospecting style and location. Compact stream sluices (12"-24" long) are perfect for backpack prospectors and remote locations. Mid-size sluices (36"-48") offer serious production capability while remaining portable. Full-size production sluices (52"+) with expanded metal and carpet systems maximize gold recovery for dedicated prospectors. Many of our sluices feature the revolutionary Dream Mat—a ribbed rubber matting that captures fine gold better than traditional carpet and miners moss, making cleanup faster and more efficient.

Choosing the Right Sluice Box:

Your ideal sluice depends on your prospecting style and location. For hiking into remote areas, choose lightweight aluminum sluices under 36" that fit in a backpack. For accessible streams with good water flow, mid-size sluices (36"-48") provide excellent production without being too heavy to move. Serious prospectors working claims benefit from 52"+ sluices with Dream Mat or multi-level riffle systems. Consider water flow at your location—low-flow streams need sluices with less aggressive riffle angles, while fast-moving water can handle steeper configurations.

Sluice Box Setup and Operation:

Proper setup is crucial for capturing gold. Position your sluice at a 1:12 to 1:8 slope (about 5-8 degrees)—too flat and gold washes through, too steep and you lose fine gold. Ensure consistent water flow covering the entire sluice width. Feed material steadily, avoiding overloading which can cause gold loss. The sluice should transport rocks and gravel smoothly while trapping heavier gold in the riffles and matting. Clean out your sluice regularly to prevent gold from working its way through the catch system.

Why Canadian Prospectors Choose Our Sluices:

We understand Canadian prospecting conditions—cold water, variable flow rates, and the need for equipment that handles rocky material. Our sluices are built for durability and designed to capture the fine gold common in Canadian deposits. Whether you're working glacial streams in BC, testing tributaries in the Klondike, or exploring Atlantic Canada gold regions, we have sluice boxes that perform reliably in real-world conditions.
